Why buy a terabyte hard disk?

In the world today, where computers are commonly use for school and work and for entertainment, it is best to have a large memory space for you to save your files. Many hard drives are available in the market today, may it be the traditional hard disk where you have to install in a computer and the popular pick of consumers today, external hard drive. Technological innovations lead to the creation of hard disk larger than the traditional. Some have memory space of 500 gigabyte and the latest is the terabyte hard disk.

External hard drive works the same just like an internal hard drive. It is useful for users since they can back-up all of their data or use it as additional memory space. It is better to have large memory hard disk so you will not choose what data to save and what to erase.

One terabyte hard disk is large enough for you to save all your important files. However, one terabyte is not the limit since some institutions uses hard disks to save all achieves and the largest occupies 600 terabyte. Of course, as the memory of hard disks get higher, you will already need to connect it in an electric socket compared with other hard disk where computer power is enough. Most of the terabyte hard disks are portable, which can still be connected to a laptop. It is convenient for people who work outside their offices.

The main purpose of a portable hard disk is for data storage. It only acts as an additional hard disk since all laptops and computers have built-in hard drives. It allows users to have a back-up of all of their files since internal hard drives are prone with internet viruses attack. Usually, whenever virus, worms or hackers get inside your computers, you have no choice but to reformat, which will lead to the erasure of all of your data. Reformat means the computer or laptop will return to the default factory settings. Reformatting is better than system restores or scanning since you are sure that there are no virus or worms left inside the hard drives. During online work, you can choose to leave the external drive off which will prevent any viruses or worms in getting inside it.

It can also provide additional space, especially the terabyte hard disks. It is best if you have a lot of digital media data such as pictures, music, and video. You can save all your data in the terabyte hard disk, leaving your internal hard drive with only a few files.

The best part of them is that they are portable which means you can bring it anywhere. Terabyte hard disks are small and light and very handy. You can share data and information by just plugging the hard disk and connecting it to laptops.

Some high tech terabyte hard disks come with fingerprint reader so you are sure that you are the only one that can access you hard disk files. It is best if your hard disk is stolen or lost because that way, other people cannot use it.

Manufacturers are designing hard disk that are durable and that can withstand different stress and pressure.

The TERABYTE HARD DISK Reviewed

Nowadays everybody uses the computer at home, at work and at school. This generates incredible amounts of digital content that needs to be stored. The demand for storage devices has grown considerably and it led to the development of the terabyte hard disk. It seems huge and it really is, but if it used to be reserved for the needs of large corporations and institutions, it is now becoming popular in a lot of house and offices because people need to store more and more digital files.
“Terra” comes from a Greek word that means “monster”. You can easily imagine the storage capacity that the terabyte hard disk offers. A terabyte actually means a million megabytes, a trillion bytes or a thousand gigabytes. It is indeed a great storage capacity that will turn out to be sufficient for the needs of basically everyone.
Just for you to realize how big a terabyte hard disk really is, you have to know that you can store on it over 300,000 photos and over 250,000 audio files in mp3 format. Ten such hard disks would be enough to host the entire collection of images in the Library of Congress. When it comes to the Encyclopedia Britannica, a terabyte hard disk can store 1,000 copies. If someone wants to print the entire information that can be contained in one terabyte, he would need to use paper produced from over 50,000 trees.
You might imagine that no one needs such an immense storage capacity, but the truth is that many people do. At home, in school and at work we produce digital content all day long. This not only needs to be stored, but also needs to be backed-up out of security reasons. More than that, the demand for storage capacity has also increased together with the development of new applications and software. Nowadays complex applications require a lot of hard disk space in order to be installed. Software that reproduces high definition audio and video content, computer assisted design (CAD) applications and games with complex graphics are examples of software that we use daily and needs a significant amount of space in order to function. Computer applications will probably continue to evolve in time and they will need more and more physical resources as they become more and more complex.
For instance, if you have a video file in standard format that is one hour long, you will need around gigabyte of space for it. If the video file of the same length is in high definition format, it will take four times more space on your hard disk. Having a terabyte hard disk is easier and simpler than having four 250 GB ones and it also needs less physical space.
The storage capacity of hard disks will probably continue to increase in order to match future needs and it is believed that hard disks capable of storing 100TB per square inch are going to be developed in the future.

Lately the terabyte hard disk is not considered that big anymore. Twice the storage capacity is available at 5400RPM and 7200 RPM. Some of these hard disks use the new SATA 6 Gbps interface which is not extremely useful for now. The terabyte hard disk has completion because the 1.5 TB hard disk is now available, but it is still more advantageous in terms of price and performance. The terabyte hard disk uses two 500 GB platters and Seagate Barracuda 7200.12 was the first hard disk that integrated the two platter in a 7200 RPM product.

Texas Memory Systems Delivers the World’s First 5-Million IOs per Second Flash-Based Solid State Disk System

Houston (PRWEB) August 5, 2009

Texas Memory Systems, maker of the World’s Fastest Storage®, today announced the RamSan-6200, the fastest, most reliable, and highest capacity solid state disk (SSD) system on the market. The RamSan-6200 offers up to 100 terabytes of Flash-based storage in a single 40U rack configuration that can sustain a record 5 million input/outputs per second (IOPS) with 60 gigabytes per second throughput while using a little over 6 kilowatts of power. To achieve the equivalent level of performance with hard disk-based storage arrays would require several thousand of the fastest, most expensive 15,000 RPM hard disk drives.

“The RamSan-6200 is a breakthrough milestone for Flash in the enterprise,” said George Crump, analyst at Storage Switzerland. “It’s no surprise that Texas Memory Systems consistently pushes the storage performance envelope, since they work with the most demanding enterprises. However, the extreme solutions of today are trending towards becoming commonplace in the near future. The fact that Texas Memory Systems is delivering a Flash solution that costs less than one fifteenth of what a hard disk-based solution can deliver on a cost per IOPS basis signals the shift towards Flash as a primary component of mainstream storage.”

Initially designed to meet the specific requirements of a customer with extreme performance needs, the RamSan-6200 now sets a new standard in performance, value, and efficiency for enterprise applications that demand performance and reliability, such as data acquisition, data warehousing, modeling, simulations, rendering, and video editing.

“The RamSan-6200 changes the storage equation for large databases, science and research labs, seismic processing, video, and Federal Government installations,” said Woody Hutsell, President of Texas Memory Systems. “It’s the only currently available SSD system offering anything remotely approaching this storage capacity and performance.”

The RamSan-6200 is a scaled up, highly reliable system that combines twenty RamSan-620 solid state disks in a single datacenter rack and uses Texas Memory Systems’ exclusive TeraWatch software to provide unified management and monitoring from a single GUI console. The system utilizes enterprise grade Single Level Cell (SLC) Flash as well as multiple levels of RAID and advanced Flash management algorithms to provide extreme reliability.

The RamSan-6200 is available now from Texas Memory Systems and its partner network. SIGGRAPH 2009 attendees can visit Texas Memory Systems and see the RamSan-6200 at booth number 2809. More information about the RamSan-620 is available online at http://www.ramsan.com/products/ramsan-6200.htm.

Videopro installs first EditShare Ark archiving system in Australia

(PRWEB) May 21, 2010

Videopro, one of Australia’s leading audio visual equipment specialists, has installed the first EditShare Ark Disk archiving system at Queensland’s Bond University Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences.

The EditShare Ark Disk will provide a safe and convenient place to backup and archive material from the University’s main EditShare servers.

Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences Technology and TV Studio Manager Daniel Murphy said the Ark Disk was the most efficient workflow option for the University’s archiving and backup needs. “We chose EditShare as it is the only product on the market that meets all our needs,” he said.

“It (EditShare) is the only shared storage solution that allows us the flexibility to work in either Final Cut Pro or Avid collaboratively.

“With the (Ark Disk), the University now has a completely tapeless workflow, from acquisition to storage and archiving.”

Bond University currently uses four EditShare servers with a total of 24 terabytes of storage space – all within its Humanities and Social Sciences faculty. EditShare’s Asia Pacific Business Development Manager Paul Hayes said the new Ark system would provide an extra 16 terabytes of storage, allowing University staff to archive and access content easily and securely.

“The EditShare servers provide the most efficient way for video content to be saved for collaborative editing,” he said. “The EditShare Ark will allow staff to free up space on these servers whilst providing an important service in the safeguarding of old files.”

The Humanities and Social Sciences faculty at Bond University uses Videopro Business Centre as their

preferred supplier and have used their services to outfit all their workflow requirements.

Videopro Business Centre Broadcast and Production Account Manager Wayne Newton has been working with Bond University for the past four years. Wayne said the EditShare Ark system would benefit the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences as they continue to support their high definition productions.

“As the technology continues to develop and evolve, particularly within the film and broadcast industries, the amount of storage space required for content increases,” Wayne said. “This investment in the EditShare Ark system puts the University in a great position to move forward and provide students and staff with the best facilities available.”

Having the central storage solution in addition to other state of the art equipment reinforces the reputation of Bond University as one of the country’s premier film and television educational institutions.

The team at Videopro Business Centre look forward to providing other institutions the same exceptional

services and products. Videopro is one of Australia’s premier retailers of audio visual technology, as well as a multi-award winning solutions provider to the corporate, government, education, hospitality, residential and broadcast and production sectors.

The broadcast and production team also hold a range of industry related training courses throughout the year, along with regular product demonstrations and information nights.
